It is not a big secret that there is some great amount of tension going on between Apple and Google for the last few months. About the reason of this conflict, you will perhaps hear two separate versions from the two companies but there is no doubt that things are not good. If they have problem then who are the companies that are likely to benefit? One of the companies that has the potential to get some kind of benefit is perhaps Microsoft. Microsoft competes with both the companies. Microsoft is the largest company in the world and when it comes to Operating System and office programs then Microsoft is the market leader.

On the other hand, Apple directly competes with Microsoft in operating system and Office. Google is the market leader in search engine and Apple is not in this field but Microsoft is. Now, Google and Apple both are competing in smart phones. Finally, all the three companies have internet browsers and they are also competing against each other to get more market share out of them.

When these kinds of companies are at odd against each other they naturally try to make strategic partners in the same industry. All the companies have some kind of strengths and weaknesses. Google is the market leader now in search engine field and you may wonder that if there is a closer relationship between Apple and Microsoft then Google’s business will not be affected directly. It can be affected negatively by in another way. If Apple and Microsoft can each into some kind of agreement then Apple can go for Live search in its iPhones, iPad and Mac OS. Thus, I am just giving you an example.

Google’s entrance in the smart phone arena with its Android platform and Google Nexus One phone has put itself at direct conflict and competition with Apple. Apple iPhone is very popular and is the most popular smart phone in USA market. Google Nexus One has just come to the market and we will have to wait how it performs in the coming years.

I think that Microsoft can get some kind of benefit if there is intense rivalry between Google and Apple. However, Microsoft will have to play about this matter sensitively or else may not get the benefit. Microsoft should try to strike a deal with one of the two companies and it seems that at this moment, it may have better luck dealing with Apple than Google. In fact, I think that Microsoft is competing against Google in many market segments. Google is promoting Google doc, Android operating system for mobile phones and even we are hearing a lot about cloud computing that will try to make Window operating system perhaps irrelevant.

On the other hand, at this moment Microsoft has less competition with Apple. At least, when it comes to internet then Microsoft does not have that much rivalry with Apple. We have already seen that Apple could make good relationship with Intel. In the past, Apple had a lot of bitter competition with Intel because Apple used to make its own processor and other hardware. Apple could solve this problem and the two companies enjoy good relationship and they are doing business very well. Perhaps, Apple also can reach some kind of compromise with Microsoft and can help Microsoft in Internet search market and in return it can get some leverage in other areas.

You may wonder why I am not talking about third possibility. The possibility that Google and Microsoft join hands and fight with Apple. I don’t think that it will happen now because of basically one factor. Both Microsoft and Apple are not fans of open source platform. On the other hand, Google has invested a lot in the open source platform and Google is trying a lot to make many things based on open source and cheaper. For example, its mobile phone operating system Android is open source and free. Its Google Doc is also free and based on open source technology.

So, Google has different philosophy compared to Apple and Microsoft. That is why; I don’t think that Google can enter any kind of strategic partnership with any of these two companies.

Just a few years ago, Microsoft was the only 800 pound gorilla in technology sector. Now, it is very nice to see that Google and Apple are also coming out and are gradually standing beside Microsoft in terms of revenue and size.
