Integrate Firefox And KGet On KDE

One of the difficulties of using KDE is integrating non-KDE applications in the environment. One of such inevitable situations is integrating Firefox/Swiftfox with KGet, one of the best download managers for KDE. There is no alternative to Firefox today, especially for development.

The easiest way to integrate these two is to use the Flashgot extension. While the name suggests a bias towards the FlashGet download manager, this extension lets you configure the download manager you want to use. An option for Flashgot is now inserted in all the dialog boxes for downloading a file. Choose that and your favorite download manager will get fired up, KGet in this case.

While this works great, I think KDE and Gnome both need to work towards the bigger goal of interoperability. I hardly see a purist installation of any of these window managers. Every user seems to be using some applications of the other window manager. Another such application that I want to see tightly integrated with KDE is gvim. I am aware of freedesktop.org which recently reached the Portland milestone. However there is still lot to cover. I am sure a better interoperability in these will also reduce the dilemma of a lot of new adopters and help adoption of Linux.
